California is determined to meet its summer energy demand. The idea of rolling blackouts and spiking prices is giving way to another phenomenon there -- the desire to steer energy usage away from peak periods through new technologies.
"Smart meters" with "demand response" capabilities provide consumers with information on their electricity usage that will allow them to realign consumption patterns. By curbing their power use during the hottest or coldest times, they not only save money but also help ease the demands on power plants and distribution lines. Utilities, in turn, can avoid buying expensive power on spot markets or generating their own juice during peak times.
